Jim Hawkins details how Jair Jurrjens came to be a Detroit Tigers farmhand:

They had never even heard of Jurrjens when an ambitious agent, based in Curacao in the Netherlands Antilles (not exactly a baseball hotbed) contacted the Tigers in May 2003 and offered to fly four young prospects, including Jurrjens, from the Caribbean to Lakeland, Fla. - at his expense - for a workout. When they got there, Al Avila, the Tigers’ assistant GM, was so impressed with Jurrjens’ poise and his 90 mph fastball that he signed him to a contract for an estimated $60,000.
